I have an instance of SQL Server installed in a Virtual PC. The default server instance (USATONMILITOL9) shows up in the Registered Server window but not in the Object Explorer window. I am unable to open this instance (USATONMILITOL9) because it does not allow connections. In order to change this setting I need to have it display in the Object Explorer window. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to show up there but I obviously must be missing something. Can anyone help?

Have you enabled remote connections?
You can enable this using SQL Surface Area Configuration.

I looked at the remote connections in the Surface Area Configuration Tool and it allows both local and remote connections.

Are you connected to it in the Registered Servers window? How are you connecting?

Thanks for the help but I found the problem. For some reason when I installed SQL Server on a Virtual PC it did not start the SQL services. Once I started the services then I was able to connect to the server instance and it showed up in the Object Explorer window.
