I tried to install SQL Server on my XP Professioanl SP3 machine and am getting an error that claims SQL server needs system restart.
Restarting the computer does no good.
I can't uninstall as I get the same error, SQL server needs system restart

Did all of your windows updates apply correctly after reboot?

Thanks, yes all other installations were fine -- IIS, Visual Web Developer, etc.

What SQL services are currently installed?

This is SQL Server 2005 Developer edition, correct?

Hi,
This is "MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 2008 EXPRESS EDITION" according to the read me.
I cannot finish the installation or uninstall, so I'm stuck.

Configuration manager and Installation center

So Configuration Manager shows no services listed, then? Do you see anything pertinent in eventvwr?

Configuration Manager shows SQL SERVER(SQLEXPRESS), SQL SERVER AGENT (SQLEXPRESS) and SQL SERVER BROWSER.
I don't know what the other thing you mentioned is.

Looking in eventvwr I see a couple of warnings, but that is all. They do not appear to be related to SQL servere

Can you start the services from inside of Configuration Manager?

SQL Server is running
SQL Server Agent is stopped and I can't see how I could start it,
same for SQL Server Browser.
Under Start Mode the last two show Other (Boot, System, Disabled or Unknown)

Can you check the Event Viewer, what it says?
