Sql Server generic database server RAID setup

  • The new server has 8 internal HD and 8 external HD. This server would act as a generic Sql instance for some of our 3rd party applications.

    Infrastructure request

internal 1 raid10 (separate logical partition for OS)

    external 1 raid 5

setup Logs & temp on the internal, data on the external

    Other1

    internal mirror (2 hd) & raid10 6 HD

    external raid 10

setup Logs and temp on the internal, data on the external

    Other2

internal 2 internal raid 10 (one OS & temp, other logs)

    external raid 10

setup Logs and temp on the internal, data on the external

    Ideas?

    thanks

    Daryl

    EDIT

    Informational:

    Went with

    2HD Mirrored OS

    6HD Raid 10 Logs & tempdb

    8HD Raid 10 Data

  • Just while you are on this.

Did you do your partition alignment on formatting the new drives?

If you didn't or don't know what I'm talking about checkout the Jimmy May Disk alignment.

In terms of your setup it's good.

    Where does the backups go?

    Cheers

    Jannie

  • Thanks for the heads up. However, disk Partition Alignment are automatic in Win Server 2008.

I actually had an infrastructure colleague who would not perform this alignment on my database servers back when.

    thanks

    Daryl
