It seems, based on reading information available on Microsoft's site, that Standard Edition can be installed on a clustered Windows 2000 Advanced Server, but you have to buy Enterprise Edition if you want automatic fail-over. Isn't automatic fail-over part of Windows AS clustering?

you have to have sql ent for active/active or active/passive. The node will not fail over properly if you don't.

What is active/active and active/passive

Active Active refers to the two SQL Servers that form the cluster. In this mode, each serves it's own clients as well as being part of the virtual server. Or each is part of two virtual server. Both servers are working.
In Active/Passive only one server is working. The other is standing by (passive). When the active fails, the passive takes over.
