Hi there,
I am setting up a SQL Server 2019 EE with WS2019 with local storages spaces.
I have tried out different layouts for the storage e.g. Storage Spaces - Virtual Disk with 2way mirror, Storage Spaces - Virtual Disk with 3way mirror.
with my DWH tests on my specific hardware the version Storage Spaces 3way mirror was the fastest in writing throughput and and equally fast in reading compared to other scenarios.
!I am simplifing the layout here - I am not using just on VD for the sql server!
Within this storage layout I tested two versions:
On the 3 way mirror I created one Virtual Disk (e.g. for tempdb).
Version a) I created one drive/partition and I put all the database-files (e.g. 8 database-files + 1 log) in this one drive.
Version b) I created 9 drives/partitions and I put one file in each partition.
The tests showed surprisingly that it made a difference and that version b was faster.
The question: In the docs, tutorials, blogs all the examples just created on disk/partition on each Virtual Disk. Is that only to simplify or is the offical support by Mircosoft only with 1:1.
Can anyone answer this?
Cheers,
Christian
