SQL Server DBA Certification

  • Hi All:

I want to become a certified DBA, i'm not sure what path is the right one. I have exprience with several versions, from 6.5 to 2012. I have no experience with 2014 and 2016. Where do I begin?
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Depends on your goals, and interests, and who you hope to get employed by.

There are several different certification paths you can follow, all detail on Microsoft certification pages.
While I don't think it's bad having certifications, there are some pretty good consulting companies who don't care about papers...not all, some.

Do you want to be a core DBA? or maybe some BI? or pure SQL Developer?

  • Core DBA. Thanks.

In the process of becoming a DBA, make sure you know how to write code to get the current date an time. T-SQL is a core skill that many DBAs just don't have.

  • Thank you Jeff.

  • Would going straight for  2016 be the right route to take?

I don't see the value-add in getting certified - not with the current certifications anyway. The sole exception is if it will benefit your employer or partner status with Microsoft.

I still would like to get the certs myself, but mostly to determine what I think I know against what MS thinks I should know, if that makes sense.

  • You make absolute sense Lynn.

That makes sense. Sadly, there are a lot of problems with questions and answers on those exams.

I absolutely agree.  I will add, however, that it does provide a structure of study to follow.  In plain English, it provides a study guide of what to study.  A lot of folks just don't know where to start.  You just have to be careful not to drink the purple Kool-Aid while doing so. 😉
