SQL Server Database Architecture

    Hi Friends,

    I have some questions which is based on interview questions. I would like to know and share with newbies how we can explain it in short/in detail.

    1) Explain the architecture of SQL Server?

    2) Explain the SQL Server Database architecture?

    I google it but getting heterogeneous informaiton. Can any one explain me here in brief / in short/ in points. What we hv to tell interviewer?

    For the first one, it would help to get some more context on what the question is based on. There are some diagrams on the overall architecture, like this one, but it's a little complicated, and I'm not sure this is something we would expect one to memorize or answer in an interview. Likely the interviewer was looking for some part of the architecture

    The second one I would assume would be based on extents/pages and having these organized into tables, but perhaps not. There might be something else that is implied here, and I'm not sure what type/level of answer one would give.

    If I got questions like that (phrased exactly like that), I would have to refer them to Books Online and the multitude of SQL Server books saying "I can't explain everything. I didn't build it. And it's too large for any one person to know every last detail."

    Then I would add "But you can always ask Paul Randall or Kimberly Tripp," if I felt comfortable enough to be snarky.

    That kind of question leads me to question the qualifications of the person interviewing me and an indication the interview is heading south.

    I would have to ask which portion of SQL and what they would like to know about the architecture. The product is simply too large to give an overall architectural overview in any meaningful way, if they persisted without much clarification that is probably an indication that a Paul Randal/Kim Tripp/Kalen Delaney comment is due and walk. I might even comment that such a question is useless in the inteview process.

    Answer to both, "Data should be preserved, and operations against it should be fast and accurate."

    That's the reason behind SQL Server's architecture, and behind any sane database's architecture.

    Beyond that, the questions are way too vague to accomplish anything or any use to anyone in an interview.
