SQL Server Consolidation Advice

  • Just trying to come up with a sensible consolidation plan for a set of 5 SQL server boxes all 64bit and Enterprise edition, Details:

    box #1: SQL Server 2005 only used for replicating live DBs to

    box #2: SQL Server 2008 only used for stand alone Database storage

    box #3: SSIS and SQL Server 2012 only used for running and storing SSIS packages

    box #4: SSRS and SQL server 2012 only used for running SSRS and storing SSRS db's

    box #5: only has SSAS 2012 installed

    My thoughts are to consolidate the SQL Server database storage onto one server bringingb oxes #1, #2 and #4's SSRS db's onto one box. Then Get SSAS, SSIS, SSRS all onto one box.

    Meaning i can reduce the Licensing by 3 enterprise editions.

    Can anyone see what issue i could have with process conflicts etc by doing this?

    Hopefully not too much of a stupid question 🙂

  • You could certainly consolidate the database engine instances to one box, whether or not you have a box that's capable of providing the level of performance you'll require from the SSIS, SSRS and SSAS on th same machine will need to be tested.

  • Thats kind of my worry.

    They will all be quad core, 64bit, with 8gb ram processing a few small Cubes/running SSIS and servicing Reports for the business.

    How to test this and then how to split will be a challenge. The biggest challenge comes from getting business sign off for another set of enterprise licenses if the tests show issues with everything being on the one box..

  • if it were me i would separate SSRS and SSIS to one box and put SSAS on its own

  • Thanks for the advice;

  • Keep SSRS and SSIS to one box and put SSAS on its own as it is more resources intensive.
