sql server clustering

  • I have some basic questions on clustering to get clarified before we go ahead

    and do clustering.

Issues related to running multiple clustered instanced of SQL Server on the same box simultaneously, possible pitfalls (with solutions, if applicable),

issues to be considered in the implementation, including configuration issues (at the server level, the cluster level, and at the SQL Server level),

and an approach to testing to determine any issues related to the installation.

Thanks for your time on this.

  • Well you cluster for resilience so why wold you want to cluster on the same box?

When you install on a cluster the Enterprise Edition knows that it IS a cluster and gives the option to install a virtual server.

This expects a virtual IP address by which the server will be identified. The installation takes an age but will take place on both nodes of the cluster at once.

If the install fails it can take an age to roll back and even then you will have to hack the registry to remove all the MSSQLSERVER entries.
