SQL Server Certs

  • I need to obtain the SQL Server 2008 Implementation and Maintenance cert ASAP

Can anyone give me an idea how best to proceed?

    1. Best study materials

    2. Timeframe that would be reasonable before I take the test. (I am relatively new to SQL Server.)

Thanks for any info that is offered.

Who or what is creating this sense of urgency?

Honestly, rushing through the material just to cram and spit out enough info to gain a certificate will not mean much when you're asked to actually do something on SQL Server. Wait a while and get some experience on SQL Server before attempting any certification exams.

    1. Best study materials

    Exam 70-450: Preparation Materials

Minimum one year of working with SQL Server on a daily basis.

  • You are facing that the wrong way.

A cert should be based upon the information that you already know. You gain the experience and knowledge and then get the certification as validation of that knowledge. Work with SQL and gain the experience is the way that you should proceed.

Why is it so critical that you get the cert?

I can think of at least one person on SSC that would disagree, but I'll leave it to Brandie to explain why.

I am curious to hear her thoughts. In the meantime, can you tell me which part you think she may disagree?

Having read her story somewhere in the water cooler. Waiting for a year or so to take the certification exams. You have to have the full story to understand her reasoning and I don't want to paraphrase it wrong.

Will wait to hear. Thanks Lynn. Have a good weekend.

  • Thanks for the quick responses.

There is a job opportunity that requires the certs. It's a great entry level opportunity into the SQL server world.

I've been using SQL Server for my own projects, but would love to be able to work with SS as an occupation.

  • If you know SQL Server and have experience go for the certs, how much time do have to prepare anywhere?

  • Frankly, the Certs. don't cost that much to sit so if I were you I'd go right ahead book one and take the exam. No harm, no known foul.

You see this way you get to gauge just how much you do know about Sql Server as opposed to how much you think you know.

You also get a good feel as to how questions are phrased etc.

Of course, you never know, you might also pass 🙂

  • An entry level position that requires certs? That's just a little contradictory.

  • Heh, during my initial job hunt for anything programming-related, I stumbled across several "entry-level" jobs that either required certification, 3-5 years of experience, or both! I was quite amazed at the employers' definition of "entry-level" :hehe:

  • Certs are a weed-out qualification. It takes a bit of time working with SQL Server and studying the material to get to a place where you can write one and have a legitimate shot at passing. Just like any educational accolade, all that attaining a cert says is that the person who earned it (legitimately or by cheating) completed something towards an end goal. Beyond that the value of the cert is purely subjective :Whistling:

  • Good answer! I'm working through the material and have taken a practice exam. I'm closer then I thought, but not quite there.

If you do not mind sharing a bit more about your situation, in all, how long have you been working with SQL Server and what percentage of your time (job or free time) has been dedicated to it? Also, did you have an application or other RDBMS programming background to build on before starting to work with SQL Server?
