SQL Server can't connect to database

  • Hi, foxxo -

I'm sorry, I should have asked this before: in Instance Configuration (prior to Server Configuration), the named instance (SQLExpress) was preselected, so I went with that, rather than selecting the default instance, as was done in the video for which you sent me the link. In the video, the guy selects the default instance (MSSQLEXPRESS). When I select the default instance, however, the instance ID remains SQLEXPRESS, rather than changing to MSSQLEXPRESS.

So, do I want to select the named instance or the default instance?

  • When I select "Default instance" in Instance Configuration

    and

SQL Server Database Engine = NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM

SQL Server Reporting Services = NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM

SQL Full-text Filter Daemon Launcher = < nothing > (no options offered)

SQL Server Browser = NT AUTHORITY/LOCAL S... (only option offered)

in Server Configuration, I am allowed to proceed to Database Engine Configuration.

I select Authentication Mode = Windows authentication mode, and I still get:

Validation errors - Missing system administrator account.

How do I set up an SQL administrator account?

  • I'd like to thank Lowell, as well as eccentricDBA, and especially foxxo, for their help in resolving my problem installing SQL Server 2008 Express with Advances Services. If there's anyway for me to vote for their remarks as helpful, I'd like to do so.
