To restore a sql server what should you backup?
my guess is
a backup of
master
msdb
model
and user databases
and operating system.
If you do this is it necessary to backup instance locations (ie \MSSQL.1). My guess is if a server died you would just reinstall os and sql server, then restore master db, then restore other system databases, then restore the user databases. Does that sound ok?

Hi,
I would backup the user & system db's on a seperate/ dedicated backup drive or even another server altogether.
I don't know what you mean by backing up the OS, but you should probably have a standard install/config for OS's in your environment. Just keep track of service packs & hotfixes applied to your software (OS, SQL & any other relevant apps) so that you have a reference point when re-install is requried.
Just my 5 cents

That's inflation man, wasn't it just 2 cents last week? 😛

I think you basically have the idea. As Lian said, make sure you know what Service Packs and Patches have been applied to your SQL Server, both OS and SQL.
