Hello everybody,
We are planning to move the hosting from provider1 to provider2. Since the website is so important we cannot let it down. Please let me know the procedure to replicate the database from SQL server1 (SQL 2000) to SQL server2 (SQL 2005). DB servers are remote to each other. Till the DNS server is changed to point to new hosting, data will be added/updated to the old SQL server. The DB transition should be seamless so that the players should not lose their score by the transition process.
Thanks in advance

I'm sure that comeone more experiened than I will correct me if I'm wrong, but I've done this before (moved databases between providers). Because a DNS change does not happen instantly, and at the same time around the world, you will have some users using the old database (website), and some will be using the new database(website) at the same time. I've heard that a DNS change can take up to 48 hours, but in my experience, it seems like it happens in 24 hours. (I just moved a site a couple of months ago).
I basically turned off the user login web page for a day - I put a message up that the site was being upgraded, and everything would be back to normal on Monday morning. While the users couldn't log in, (therefore there weren't any DB chages going on), I had provider #1 make a copy of the database, email it to me, I sent it to provider #2, and they created the database.
Good luck,
Jim
