Hi,
I recently installed SQLServer2000 on a new clean WinXP machine, and SQL Server Agent won't start. I have checked the 'Auto-start service when OS starts' and that doesn't work, and when I try to start it manually using SQLServer Service Manager, it still won't start but it stops the other two services from running aswell. I have also tried to install SP3 to see if that would fix it, but the installation only get half way through and then I get an 'Error running script' error and the installer bombs out.
I have had no problems like this on my Win2000 machine.
Any ideas how to sort this ??
Cheers
Mic

Can check \Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG\SQLAGENT.OUT & SQLAGENT.1 thru SQLAGENT.7, if you could find any error in the log. You could also try checking ERRORLOG * ERRORLOG.1 thru 7 for any possible error.

Which edition (Standard, Developer, Enterprise, Personal) did you install?
Reason I ask, is that ONLY Developer, Personal, or MSDE can run on XP.
If you are using one of those editions, then I suggest re-installing it as it sounds like a bad install.
If you are using one of the other editions, it's just not going to work.

I am using personal.
I have ended up reinstalling Windows on a freshly formatted drive, as I tried reinstalling just SQLServer, but things just got worse.
I'll post again if this doesn't work.

That's worked, and the only difference between this setup and the last, was I haven't downloaded the latest security updates for XP.
Hmmmmm !
