Hello, need your help!
I want to buy Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Enterpise edition but stuck on how to order the specfication and all what I get a recommendation from the vendor is confusing.
I have a server with 2 CPU sockets each 10 cores and the operating system is Windows Server 2012 R2. I will be the only one using the server to pull data out of it but the database needs daily restoring from the primary database based on the log shiping with TDE certificate (that is the only reason needed the enterpise version) . So, how many packs of SQL 2017 enterpise 2 core license should I buy to successfully install?
Some of the vendors said only licensings on 4 of the 20 cores is enough and some others say all the 20 cores should be licensed....kind of confused to determine.
Thank you for your advice in advance!

Can you not go SQL 2019, TDE became a Standard edition or above feature in 2019, will save you a chunk of change if you can.
I am no licensing expert, but reading the licensing docs you need to license ALL cores that are visible to SQL, so if it can see 20 cores, you need 20 licenses.
So you will need to purchase 10 packs of 2 core licenses (10 x 2 = 20) as they are only sold in 2 core packs.
Legal Note - Do not take what is said on a public forum as the honest truth with regards to licensing, if you have any questions you must speak to your Microsoft Account Representative or your authorised reseller and get their confirmation on what it is you need to purchase. Make sure you get this in writing also so you have a history trail for what was purchased, how it was purchased and what advise you where given from them, as they are the gatekeepers to your licensing and they will know what agreements you have with Microsoft about what you can and cannot do etc.

Strong recommendation, don't take anyone's advice on licensing. Go to Microsoft. They know. Everyone else just has opinions.
For what it's worth, I agree with @Ant-Green assessment, but I'd still go to MS for the real works.

@Ant-Green, thank you for your honest advice! I am going to buy the 10 packs.
As you said, SQL 2019 standard supports TDE but it won't work for my case. Because the primary database has SQL 2017 enterpise and it won't allow me to restore my database on standby if diffferent version.
