SQL Server 2014 - Service Pack 1?

  • Hi there

I am planning to migrate from SQL2008R2 --> SQL2014 but my team mates have concerns about migration of MS products without service pack release.

Do anyone knows when SP1 for SQL2014 is going to be released?

    Cheers

  • It might take a while.

The SQL Server team has the tendency lately to release more and more cumulative updates, and less service packs.

For SQL Server 2012, there's still only sp1.

Waiting for the service pack to migrate though is a bit old-fashioned 😉

+1 on this even though I have old fashioned tendencies myself.

If I was you and I was going through a thorough testing cycle I would apply the CU previous to the latest one (unless the latest CU fixes a problem I know I have). This is a pretty safe stance.

  • I'm with everyone else. I wouldn't suggest waiting for SPs at this point. There have just been fewer and fewer of them. I suspect they may be going the way of the dodo. However, there has already been a Cumulative Update (CU) for SQL Server 2014. That might help calm the fears of your co-workers.

  • We went live with SQL2014 CTP2 for our BI servers. For the stuff that existed in SQL2008R2 we have not noticed any problems. We are deferring the use of Hekaton until we have upgraded to RTM and CU1, but this is due to work prioritisation and not to concerns with the product.

We are using the BufferPool Extension feature, which has shifted over 90% of our database IO from spinning disk to SSD and given a good performance boost.

For any new installation of SQL2014 I would recommend you go direct to CU1. You have to test the environment whatever you do, and CU1 has a lot of useful fixes.

  • Superstitious, anecdotal reasons for not upgrading, OR known workload, trialled extensively on comparable proof-of-concept kit? Hide until 2017, OR clearly attempt to identify positives and negatives. Specific tests for specific features to get the best from the new version of the product, eg In-memory OLTP, Buffer-pool extension, cardinality estimator changes, writeable clustered columnstore etc in conjunction with your business-critical queries. Positive and negative behaviour changes identified. Workarounds identified for regressions where possible. Technical debt and/or connect items logged for items that cannot be resolved.

  • They might release it in November with SQL 2012 SP2.

  • Crazy, I was told Nov. by multiple MSFT engineers, and then BOOM.....http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43340

  • I know right, I was at lunch when I got the news today from MS via Twitter!

  • I suppose I'll bring it up here:

SQL 2012 SP2 is also vulnerable to KB2969896 "Data loss in clustered index occurs when you run online build index", so I would suggest that part of installing SP2 is also installing Build 5522http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2969896/en-us

Why MS released SP2 (not including the data loss hotfix) on the same day the released the hotfix itself rather than delaying SP2 until the hotfix is included is a mystery to me - I'll chalk it up to incompetence for now.

SQL 2014 has the same bug - 2014 RTM CU2 is the cure.

  • SP1 for SQL 2014 has been released but has been redrawn because of installing issue with SSIS.

  • ..Hope they will fix the issue and release it again asap.
