As pietlinden mentioned, locate the files, make certain that the right permissions are in place for the SQL Server (the credentials the server is running under) to access the files and attach them to the server. This will work as long as the current SQL Server version is equal or greater than the previous one.

Go to SQL server configuration manager and see what account SQL is using as that account may not have permission to access the folder where your mdf files are in.

you will need to run SMSS as and administrator to attach the db files - right click on the desktop icon and select run as administrator.
you should then be allowed to attach the db files to your instance.

I've to thank all of you who helped. SQL Server 2014 for Windows 10 is nuts!
So, I left my laptop overnight and went to sleep with all the stuff that I was doing and then this morning it rebooted.
I wasn't able to access anything with the old server nor the new one. So I went to the Control Panel to see what services for 2014 is up and none was up. I had to manually restart them.
Guess what? I was able to bring up the new one and the old one. Go figure this one out.
Now, do I have to manually start these up? I would be a hassle.
What do you think is the problem with Windows 10 & SQL Server 2014?
