Hi,
I have a 2 part question that I am struggling to fnd information on.
1. Is SQL Server 2014 Management Studio backward compatible for managing 2012 and 2008 R2 databases or is it a case of 'it depends what you want to do'.
2. Can we install SQL Server 2014 Manamgent Studio on a client machine along side SQL Server 2012 MS or 2008 R2 MS.
Any information greatfully received,
Regards,
Gary.

1. Yes, you can use 2014 Management Studio 2014 for older databases. I do it all the time. It's just not advisable the other way round.
2. Yes, I have 2012 and 2014 on my PC at the moment. (No reason other than laziness :-D. Your post has reminded me that I need to uninstall the 2012 version, actually.)

Hi Gary,
1. You can use SSMS 2014 to manage 2012 & 2008 R2 instances but I have had some problems connecting to 2005 instances.
2. I've got SSMS 2014 on my local machine alongside SSMS 2012

'It depends on what you want to do' for SSMS. Remember, database compatibility mode can be a restriction.
Also, you would not be able to use the new 2014 features (like backing up to a URL).
99% of everything should work though.

Is it possible to connect to SQL2014 from SQL2012 SSMS ?
Before our central management server had been upgraded to SQL2012, I used to be able to connected to SQL2012 from SQL2008R2 SSMS management server.
