sql server 2012 licensing for stand alone PC

  • Hi,

What is the sql server 2012 licensing for standalone PC [it is going to be embedded in the PC].

OS: Win 7 64 bit 16 GB RAM.

Max of 1000 users at the time

checked SQL_Server_2012_Licensing_Reference_Guide1.pdf it is having 2 types of licensing

    1) Server+CAL

    2) Core-based

Which one is suitable for Standalone PC.

  • Depends on what type of app and/or the amount of users.

If its a web based application, then you cannot say how many people are going to be using the software, so you must license per core.

If its an internal app and it cannot be accessed from outside of your organization and you can prove this to Microsoft or an auditing company when and if you may get audited then you can look at the server/cal or core based licenses.

General rule of thumb we use is to license everything by core as its much cheaper as we have so many users using the app(s) plus we get the added benefits for virtualisation rights, the server+cal way just costs to much once you hit a certain amount of users.

But with anything licensing, speak to Microsoft or your reseller directly, MS make the rules, they enforce the rules, so get it from the horses mouth when it comes to something so legal as licensing.
