  • Not entirely sure what you mean by the question, but one of the coolest new pieces of technology to come with SQL Server 2012 is the AlwaysOn Availability Groups. You should look those up in the Books Online.

  • Thank you grant and Koen...

    I am seeking career opportunity....

    New technology....

    New job roles....

    Cloud compatibility...

    How it can be beneficial through all aspects.....

  • I wouldn't say that SQL Server 2012 introduces anything like a new job role or new job opportunities. It expands on existing jobs and provides a few new ways to get things done, such as the High Availability offerings of AlwaysOn.

  • You just said that only High Availability offering AlwaysOn is the new functionality added...

    But SQL 2012 is cloud ready platform... my question is in that context....

    because database administration for cloud is really challenging.... any thoughts on this??

    He didn't say that.

    Grant gave an example of one new feature, which he thinks is the coolest.

    But there are many more new features:

    * improved SSIS

    * in-memory SSAS

    * filetables

    * new TSQL functions

    * columnstore indexes

    * ...

    I didn't say the only thing added was AlwaysOn, just that it's one of the more singular things added. There are new functions, new data types, all sorts of new functionality, but nothing that is completely rearranging the role of the DBA.

    As to the cloud, SQL Server 2012 is not SQL Azure. They are different. Yes, there are links between 2012 & Azure, but those links were there in 2008R2, just not as functional. SQL Server 2012 is still just a server-based piece of software.

    I'm not knocking it. It's a great and wonderful piece of software, but there's nothing earth-shattering in this release. Here's a link to the list of new items: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb500435.aspx

    Wow wow wow. Hold on!

    SSIS has a working undo button and you say this release has nothing earth-shattering?!?

    :hehe: :w00t: 😀

    Ha! I figured you for more of a SEQUENCE guy. Now we're just like Oracle.

    I'm actually more excited about some Oracle functions that now are also available in SQL Server, such as end of month, the first/last of a partition in an PARTITION BY clause.

    I still don't know what to do with SEQUENCE. Never had the need to distribute a sequence over multiple tables. Identity works just fine for me.
