SQL Server 2008 R2 vs SQL Server 2008 SP2 confusion

  • I'm confused about whether I should install SQL Server 2008R2, or SQL Server 2008 and apply SP2. We do not use Reporting Services or OLAP and have no plans to use either. What is our best path going foward?

  • SQL 2008 R2 is a later version that SQL 2008. If you have the choice I'd always go for the latest version, SQL 2008 R2.

  • I believe SP2 can not be applied to 2008R2. Is that because 2008R2 has all the SP2 fixes included? I was under the impression that these were separate tracks for some reason.

  • 2008 and 2008R2 are different versions and therefore on different 'tracks'. so the SP2 for 2008 is not applicable to R2.

I would agree that if you are upgrading at this point go straight to R2, 2008 costs the same so might as well go for the latest and greatest.

  • As George says just because 2008 is in the name the versions are different. I really don't like this R2 stuff as it's not the same, if you use windows 2008 R2 you'll find it somewhat different to windows 2008 too!

  • I'd go with SQL Server 2008 R2 . Better version with additional features.

    Thank You,
