Is it a good idea to get sql server service pack through SCCM package.
Description:
We will calling SCCM package and Sccm utility will install SQL Server Service pack automatically

.. That shouldn't make any difference I think.
Doesn't matter how you install... installation should succeed.

My question is mostly related to sql sever sanity check... we have to do it manually, just for automating execution does not make my much believer to support that idea...

Hey! I too am looking into using SCCM to deploy Service Pack 2 and Cumulative update #4 for SQL Server 2008 R2. Normally I just batch script service pack applies, but we've got about 250 2008 r2 instances scattered across North America, some with awful WAN connections. Any bit of intelligence that could be added to the deployment process would be a huge help.
Did you end up using SCCM to deploy your SQL patches? If so, did you find a deployment template online or did you create your own? And, am I understanding the documentation correctly when I read it to says that, when you cannot find a pre-generated deployment template for X task, the first step to creating one is to write a batch file that performs X task?
I'm having a real hard time finding any Microsoft documentation at all on using SCCM to deploy SQL Service Packs. Every search returns a million hits for SCCM supported SQL Server version and patch when I'm searching using "how to use SCCM to deploy SQL Server Service Packs" and similar. Any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

We will be using SCCM to deploy SQL Server Service packs, we have a team in our company which have create this package for us.
This Packages does all the check which service pack requires, also, we have manually added two more checks
1) server been rebooted in last 1 day if no give an error
2) route system database (not user) backups to local drive C:
and do the silent install.
We are still in testing phase of this package... but i think its a good and effective way of automating service packs in sql servers
