SQL Server 2008 R2 instance connection indicator not showing green

  • I'm pretty new to SQL Server so forgive me if this is an elementary question. I am connected to an instance hosted on a VM. I can connect and do all the things I am supposed to do, how ever the little green arrow that is supposed to show when you are connected is showing as a white solid circle. A little help here would be appreciated.

  • If your talking about Object Explorer and Registered Servers well to me that is normal, I have 75 servers that dont show up as green.

  • I think the "green arrow" shows up only if the account you're connecting with has rights to start/stop the service. If you right click on the server name in object explorer the options to stop or pause should be greyed out - if you had access to do this you'd get the green icon there.

  • Thanks all for the replies. It turned out to be an issue with my DBA login not being part of the correct windows user group. Got it all fixed now though.
