Did you install one of the CTPs or the evaluation version? It should have said what version it was during the installation.

That would have been one of the CTPs. Any idea how long ago you installed it?
All of the CTP versions had a built-in expiry date. You're going to have to uninstall it, then either download the 180 day evaluation version, the express version or look at purchasing a SQL licence.

You should be able to. In fact, you should be able to use 2005 anyway. 2005 and 2008 can be installed and work on the same machine at the same time.
Check that you still have SQL 2005 installed.

A few of the CTPs broke 2005 badly. Also, it is unlikely you would be able to use the database with 2005. I doubt (not sure though) that it is downwards compatible. i.e. attach a 2008 mdf to a 2005 box.
(Does the SQL service stop once expired or only tools?)
Cheers,CrispinI can't die, there are too many people who still have to meet me!It's not a bug, SQL just misunderstood me!

They're not, as expected. Trying to attach a 2008 db to a 2005 server gives an error reporting incorrect version number.
At least it's a more logical error than 2000 throws trying to attach a 2005 DB. 🙂

The service won't start if it has expired.
