SQL Server 2008 Express/Advanced or SQL Server 2005 Standard

  • Hello,

I have the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005 & the Express Edition of SQL Server 2008/Advanced. My question is, which Edition should I use? Right now I am only developing application for my self & friends so the projects are not very complicated. I was using Microsoft's Access but the system administrator where I work said I should put my energies towards SQL Server. I feel I should agree with him, but which version should I use? The 2005 Standard Edition or the 2008 Express Edition/Advanced?

    Please Advise.

    Thanks,

    robblot

  • If the projects are for yourself and friends, I'd go wih express. I'd even say express if it would be a desktop app you might consider selling commercially. For true server passed commercial projects, standard as a minimum, and then I'd suggest purchasing the Developers Edition and use that as your development platform.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I will use the SQL Server 2008 Express/Advanced

  • As Lynn already wrote, use SQL Express 2008. Just have a look to it's restrictions like 4GB maximal database size.

Just one information, "Advanced" relates to the additional components like GUI interface, reporting services and fulltext search.
