SQL Server 2008 32-bit on Windows 2008 64-bit

  • There is a server with Windows 2008 Standard 64-bit having SQL Server 2008 Standard 64-bit already there running well. Now there is an application that currently supports SQL 2008 32-bit so we are planning to install SQL Server 2008 32-bit as second instance. Is this supported or going to cause any problem. Your response is appreciated.

  • I am not sure if there will be any issues.

But it should definitely be supported, with some restrictions. Here is the link from the MS site. SQL Server 2008 Hardware and Software Requirements.

I would suggest installing this in a TEST environment first.

  • In the hardware can be problem the memory use, I don't know your hardware components that you have in your server but if you have the large memory environment or let me say that you should have like this system in your server, you will check the AWE enable to use the amount of your available memory because you SQL SERVER 64 bit don't required to configure the AWE,so the environment with SQL Server 2008 32 bit need some AWE config!

This was the one problem that I have during configuration on my System!

  • ...and I vote for vstitte's suggestion ... for the TEST environment or maybe any virtual machine!
