There are no current plans for releasing a new service pack for the very simple reason not enough people are asking for it.
So click on this link and vote for another SQL Server service pack! (and rate it also..!!)

By the way you can just rate the feedback without logging in/signing up..but it would be loads better to sign up and make a true vote for service pack 3!

In any programme 100% accuracy is not possible and there will be some bug. Hence I stongly recommend for Service Pack 3.
Mearly selling product will not help in long tearm; People are also looking for after sales services too in this competitve market.

As we might find SQL Server 2008 on our horizon, still for years to come we will be working on SQL Server 2005. This is not only because the use of SQL Server has increased by leaps and bounds with SQL Server 2005 in almost all application in most of the domains, but also because there is lots still to be explored in MS SQL Server 2005. I am quite sure the development team at the Microsoft-end did not anticipate this overwhelming response to the product and the power they have unleashed. On another point of view, with the release of SQL Server 2008, I am sure, there is quite a lot of difference that is going to be brought about about how we anticipate its features, specially virtualization.
Also, there are few places, like the replication, where the team can work out to avoid re-initialization of the whole publication for a few articles, and a bit of care for prevention of errors due to setup of replication with scripts.
It is evident, from the above points that, there are few places which can be improved, to make it better in it's version. This will not only help us DBAs, but will also appease the requirements of the companies, so as to retain customers who would prefer to migrate to any other RDBMS than to MS SQL Server 2008, speaking from business point of view.

There is still no formal statement from Microsoft.
A quick version history:
RTM – Nov 7, 2005
SP1 – April 19, 2006 ( 5 months )
SP2 – Feb 20, 2007 ( 10 months )
SP3 - ? -> 13 months and counting.
Given that the two prior service packs include loads of new features that in reality haven't been patched, it would seem to me that SP3 would be a priority. I can understand that everyone is busy preparing for the release of SQL Server 2008, but that is not a good enough reason to forgo support on an existing package.

Got this from our Rep yesterday in response to a question on SP3:
"I’m told that there is not a plan for SP3 at this time. From our perspective, there isn’t big enough need as of yet."
That is quite disappointing, but not really surprising. There is a lot of inertia to overcome to get that perspective changed, so if you haven't voted yet, please do so! Thank you.
