Hi,
When I am trying to run SP3 upgrade setup (X86) on couple of my pre-prod boxes, setup is getting into hung state (message: setup is searching for sql server instance) for long time and after an hr setup is progressing to next wizard, but it is not recognizing database engine services, it can only able to detect client components, xml services and other stuff. SQL Configuration manager is also not pulling SQL Services immediately (message: WMI searching for SQL Services), services are popping up after some time frame. SQL Server error logs, windows event logs, setup logs..nothing is showing any issue. We have 2GB of RAM available and 4 processors are there (32-bit).
Work Around:
1. Allocated 1300MB MIX and MAX server memory to SQL Server and restarted the SQL Services, still no progression on setup or even services pull up configuration manager.
2. Upgraded Win Sp1 to Winsp2, issue did not fixed.
2. Increased paging size, does not worked
3. make more room on C:\ drive, that does not worked
It seems like there is WMI issue going on internally, in order to overcome this issue and to run SQL SP3 setup smoothly what needs to be done.
I do not think it is a memory issue, because 2GB physical RAM is more than enough to run SQL Server smoothly.

Try enabling the WMI logging and see if it helps. Refer this and this.

Thanks Pradeep. In my scenario I can able to connect to WMI without any error (WBEMTEST.EXE tool), Event Viewer not showing any error message related to WMI errors. WMI logs (C:\WINDOWS\system32\WBEM\Logs) does not any error message, SQL Instance is also properly registered at Registery level. Here is a kind of error message I found in event viewer

Two issues needs to be fixed.1) Why SCM is taking long time to showup services & SP3 setup is taking long time to proceed with next wizard even though 2GB RAM exists?
2) Why SP3 setup is not recognizing database engine services, integration services..etc?

Does the wbemess.log provide any insights?

0x80041003 means Current user does not have permission to perform the action.
Can you please check the permissions that the user has? Alternatively can you try installing SP3 by logging in as a different user?

The use is having full administrator proviledges, I ran the SP3 setup with some other user by enabling the WMI verbose logging to full. log shows the below message

I tried with some other Administrator login, with that user also setup is not recognizing database engine. SQL Configuration is itself taking long time to read / display SQL Services.

Did you try the code which I had posted earlier? If that did not work can you please check the value of Resume key in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup
MSSQL.1 needs to be replaced with the actual instance folder as appropriate.
If the value of Resume is 1 then we need to set it to 0 to trick Service Pack installation to start from scratch.

I ran the code which was given by you, if worked without any error, even resume value in the registry is also zero, but my SQL Server Instance name is (ESQBAINTDB\INSTANCE1). I did not reboot the machine after executing the below commands, but still SP3 setup is not recognizing sql database engine. May I know your contact number, so that i can share my screen and let me know your feasible time.

I had executed the above code, it worked fine, even resume value in the registry is set to zero. My sql server instance name is ESQBAINTDB\INSTANCE1. I did not reboot the machine after the script execution, but still my SP3 upgrade wizard is not recognizing database engine. Please let me know your contact number and feasible time, so that I can work with you to resolve the issue. Appreciate your help.
