SQL Server 2005 SP2 Instance co-existing with SQL 2005 SP1 Instances on same box

  • I will be installing a brand new SQL Server 2005 instance (with SP2) on a production server in a few days.

The problem is that this server already has TWO other SQL 2005 instances installed, both on SP1.

Am I going to have problems installing the SP2 instance with the other two SP1 instances already present?

Will I be forced during/after the installation to do a "blanket" SP2 upgrade of all instances in the box?

Can SP2 and SP1 instances co-exist peacefully on the same machine?

Has anyone come across any of these issues during SQL 2005 SP2 upgrade/installation?

  • No issues. While applying Sql Server service packs you will be prompted to select the instance to which SP2 needs to be applied. You need to choose the appropriate instance so that SP2 will be applied to that instance alone without disturbing the other instances..

Thank you for the response. I'm just being extra cautious, one never knows what they will face during an upgrade...

  • One catch is that any shared components, like Workstation components, SSIS, etc., will be upgraded to SP2.
