Hi,
I would like to get the experts suggestions/Guidelines on the Best practices for installing SQL Server 2005 in Standalone and cluster in Production environment. While installing what are the steps to follow. Here I will ask some general questions that most DBAs has in their mind so that we all get good answers.
1. Can we install any sql server features on C drive (OS drive)?
2. what are the features that must be installed On C drive?
3. what are the features that will be installed on C drive even if you did not select C drive while installing?
4. By default, the data files and log files will be created on drive:\Programfiles\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data. Even if I selected a Folder called Microsoft SQL Server on Drive D, the data and log files will be created on D:\Microsoft SQL Server \MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data. So I want to select a folder called SQLDATA on D drive and SQLLOG on E drive and while installing only I want to choose these folders so that .mdf and .ldf files will be created over there. How can Achieve this while installaing?
I do not want these sub folder MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data.
5.Books online and work station components are installed, Even If I did not select them while installing. I tested this many times. Is this normal behaviour?
In cluster:
1) We need to install the SQL Server features in a drive local to the nodes not on the shared drives. Is having C drive(OS) only as a local drive on all nodes and installing SQL Server on that Cdrive is a Best Practice or We should Must have other Local drive other than C(OS drive) and Install SQL Server on that Drive. Which one one is a Best practice?
2)If we install multiple instalces on Active node, Do we need to create a backup group, which consists a Backup drive for all instances, and write all the instances backups to that backup drive OR Add a extra Drive for backups in SQL group itself for each instance and write backups to that added drive? Which one is the best practice?
3) What kind of failover tests we need to do before going Production other than Moving groups between nodes and Failing NIC card?
Thanks
