SQL Server 2005 installation

  • Hi there,

I am new with SQL Server 2005. I have a doubt regarding sql server 2005 Installation.

When we install SQL server 2005 using installation CD, usually, we get the options of selecting SQL services as well (like Analysis services,Integration services).

When I installed SQL server on my laptop..thats what I saw.

However, Do we have Installation CD where we don't get such options (Option of installing SQL server services)?

Like, when I start running installation wizard from CD & when it comes to point of asking about services to install etc. All those services remain gray i.e. they can't be selected.

So,after installing SQL server on local machine, one will have SSMS, BOL, BIDS etc. And under SQL server configuration manager, there won't be any services running. is it so?

BTW,this is for environment where user does not have Admin rights.

    please let me know,

    thanks

  • Which features you can or cannot install depends on a couple of things like the OS you're using, is IIS installed or not (necessary for RS),which edition of SQL 2005 do you have, etc.

So for us to give you the best answer you should give more information about what exactly you try to do.

  • Sorry for missing out on providing more information.

    Its Windows XP, professional, SP2

    SQL server -- Enterprise edition

    NO IIS

    Any other info you need?

    thanks

  • You cannot install Enterprise Edition on Windows XP.

Only Express and Developer Edition can be installed on XP.

Developer Edition includes all the features from Enterprise, but for Reporting Services you need IIS with ASP.net.

  • Sorry!

    damn...its standard edition. my bad

  • If I'm not mistaken, Standard requires a server OS, not a desktop OS, just like Enterprise.

On XP, you can only install Express or Dev editions, to my knowledge. Might be able to install Workgroup, but I don't think so.

  • If you want to install it to test things, you can use a Virtual machine.

  • virtual server enterprise will quite happily allow virtual sql servers to run, in fact it is possible to set up a 2 node sql cluster 😉
