SQL Server 2005 Express (Adv Series) Installation problems

  • Hi All

I have taken over a job that needs completing (or finishing off) from someone who is no longer in the company. I was involved slightly when this problem first occurred, however other things took priority and now I am revisiting it .

    The problem is as follows:

We had a new phone system installed that came with call monitoring software. The phone system was installed without a problem, however the call monitoring software had to be installed by us. As i remember, we ran the installation and it prompted for SQL Server 2005 express with advanced features to be installed, however something caused it to crash half way through.

Now, when i try running the installation the database cannot be created. I then try removing it or uninstalling the SQL Server from Add/Remove Programs and it says no sql instance exists so i cannot do anything.

There is no service running and no database files exist in the default directory for the system databases. In my opinion, there is no instance, just the database engine (if that is possible). The only folders in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server directory is a 80 and a 90 folder.

This is becoming a real pain and i do not want to have to reload the machine. Is there anyway i can get the instance (which doesnt exist, but seems to trick the uninstallation programs) off and start the installation again with hopefully no problem.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Nic

  • this happened to me as well; a partial install kept me from redoing or uninstalling.

i googled "completely uninstall sql2005" and found this link at microsoft that gave the annoying details of all the files and registry items you need to remove to get the installer to run correctly again:

  • Thanks for this Lowell.

However, I have been through the instructions but I get to the point where i have to find the GUID for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 in the registry and it doesnt exist!! i can find Microsoft SQL Server below the GUID's and the KB's but there is no GUID entry in the registry with a display name of Microsoft SQL Server 2005!

Any ideas other than throwing this machine out of the window!! 🙂
