sql server 2005 dev edition - any limitations?

  • is there any limit on using the sql server dev edition...like if someone has the exe files for dev edition..can i just copy them and install on my machine..will that be as per the books?..i mean is that in anyway against licensing for MSFT for dev edition..any ideas appreciated..thanks,

  • Developer Edition - cost less than $50 (USD), available at AMAZON.COM. Purchase it and you will have no license worries.... The only limitation is that it may not be used as a Production Server .. it is meant to be for developers only.

  • Software installation involves a little more of just making a copy of exe files.

Why don't you download it from Microsoft then proceed with a normal installation?

that would possibly fall under the realm of software piracy 😉

Did a little goggle / Microsoft search and found the following site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/pricing-licensing-faq.aspx

    Which states:

    Q. What is SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and how is it licensed?

    A.

SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition is licensed per developer and must be used for designing, developing, and testing purposes only.

So doing what you were thinking of doing is definitely software piracy!!!

That's basically stealing and we kind of frown on that sort of thing around here.

You can get a copy of SQL Server Express for free if you need a database to start learning on. You'll have to do everything using TSQL, which is better anyway.

  • perfect....thanks again everyone for suggesting me..i did not use it..that is why i wanted to make sure from experienced people here..i just wanted to use for practice..but since it is meant only for one developer at a time..i wouldnt use it..thanks everyone for showing me the right path.

  • That's all right.

Pick up a copy of SQL Express. It's free and you can learn most of what you need there. When you want to expand into mirroring and partitioning and all the other high-end stuff, spend $50 and get the dev version.d

  • Are you a student?

If so, you might want to check this out.

Another option is a trial version - these are usually good for 6 months.
