As far as I can tell the Cummulative updates are not really cummulative in that CU2 does not include the fixes in CU1. Futhermore if you need the updates in CU1 after applying CU2 you need to uninstall CU2 first. I ran into this issue when I went from SP2 then applied CU8. There was a hot fix in CU1 dealing with report printing that we required and it seemed to still be an issue at this point so I had to uninstall CU8 before applying CU1. Has anyone else had this issue or perhaps di I do something wrong? Are cummulative updates suppossed to be cummulative or is this just a bad name.

Anirban,
Setting up more places to share information sometimes becomes too confusing and easy to make mistakes. We run this as an article since it fits the publishing system and we want to draw attention to it as a headline. We do not run it in place of other articles, but in addition to them.

CUs include all previous CUs. So CU9 includes all fixes from previous CUs.
If you have something that doesn't appear to be included, then MS has a problem somewhere. Their position has been the CUs, and even hotfixes, are built on the current branch of code, which include all previous fixes.

Thanks for the clarification Steve. I will try to verify this

I'm confused (which is not all that surprising) about a couple of things.
1. I thought "Microsoft Update" would show updates for more than just Windows, to include SQL Server. I know it does show Rollups for Exchange. Apparently it does not include SQL Server 2005.
2. The GDI fix, 3073, has an article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954606) that has a date of September 9, 2008. It also has a relatively high article number, relative to the other versions around it in the list. Where does this GDI fix come into play? Why is it so old (version number) and yet so new (date and article number)? Is it included in some Cumulative Update?
So, it turns out that I'm running 9.0.3073 which appears to be SP2 with just the GDI and no Cumulative Updates. Is this correct? If I hadn't found this article I would've never realized that. (This is why I conclude that "Microsoft Update" must not really include SQL Server 2005: it has never told me a CU was available.)
Now SP3 is out. It sounds like it has all through and including Cumulative Update 9. I'm guessing this from the somewhat confusing bullet point on the SQL Server 2005 Technet News Blog (http://blogs.technet.com/dataplatforminsider/archive/2008/12/10/sql-server-2005-sp3-now-available-for-download.aspx).
Would someone confirm to me that I am, indeed, running SP2 with only the 954606 GDI patch installed and no other CU's? I'm new to MSSQL and all of this versioning is a bit confusing.

You are correct about your version 3073. See http://www.sqlsecurity.com/FAQs/SQLServerVersionDatabase/tabid/63/Default.aspx
or
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Administration/2960/ for more info.
The Service Pack , like SP3, includes all CU below so SP3 would have all the latest fixes. I thought Microsoft committed to SP3 but it is not yet out?
On my Add-removve program panel if I select Microsoft Update I see the CUs and SPs for SQL Server

me being nitpicky:
9.00.31529333097http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=933097
Cumulative hotfix package (build 3152) for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 is available
9.00.31529333097http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=933097
Cumulative hotfix package (build 3152) for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 is available
That CU is in the list twice.

It seems SP3 is missing the last two cumulative updates.
Take a look at this SQL Server Magazine article for the full story http://www.sqlmag.com/Articles/ArticleID/101085/101085.html
I plan to wait for SP3 cumulative update #1 before I start evaluating this latest service patch.

SP3, CU1 is out, but it's mainly fixes from SP2 CUs 10 and 11 that didn't get into the SP3 rollup.
