I've had Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer on my desktop for a yeare with no issues. I developed problems when I tried to install SQL Server 2000 and service pack 3a from a Microsoft DVD dated November 2004. Since the install the csrss process continuously uses 25-30% of CPU resources and the sqlmangr process will not stay initialized. It seemingly continuously tries to initialize but fails and its CPU and memory useage constantly fluctuates. When I reboot the box, (running Windows XP v5.1 Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:ServicePack 2) a message box appears telling me sqlmangr cannot initialize because the computer is shutting down.
I tried to uninstall Sql Server 2000 but this did not resolve the issue. Anu suggestions?

I think you're nicely messed up here. I haven't seen this, but I'd suggest uninstalling, removing the folders (save your dbs elsewhere), delete the registry keys and then start again.

Nicely messed up is a good description.
I followed your suggestion to uninstall, remove folders, delete the appropriate registry keys, and reinstall.
Now it works, though desktop support is somewhat appalled I played with the registry.
Thanks for the advice, and keep up with the daily editorials. I find them insightful and informative.
