Hi Guys,
Does anyone ever setup failover server with SQL server 2000 enterprise edition? Serveral questions here:
1. Why price varies so much? $3,220 to $19,999 from different online retailer for 1 processor license. Any trick? Retail box is enough for me. Does anyone has a good recommendation on online retailer?
2. Can I set up a failover server with server plus w/25 CAL license, or I must get 1 or 2 processor license for the setup? ~40 people in the organization. Budget < 6,500
Thanks.

Hi I did call them. Seems Server Plus w/25 CALs is the choice. But there are so many retailer and some offers are too good to be true. Is anyone know any decent site?

The $19,000 is the retail price per cpu for sql enterprise. The $3,200 was probably either sql standard per cpu, sql standard per seat with 25 cals or enterprise per seat with no cals.

You also need to look out for Academic Bundles. Acedemia has its advantages especially in pricing - but if you don't qualify, your out of luck. http://www.cdw.com or http://www.microwarehouse are usually very trustworthy

Thanks. One more question, if the license is only for 1 CPU, but 2 cpus on the machine, do I need to take 1 cpu out, or sql is smart enough to only run on 1 cpu?

I think you will have to take one cpu out or purchase another cpu license.

In enterprise manager you can assign 1 cpu for SQL server, the other would need to stay unchecked. At least this is my understanding of the license.
