Hello,
I have a Dell Server which as one SQL Server 2000 instance and three SQl Server 2005 named instances.
The OS is W2k3 32bits.
I have 8GB of ram on the server.
I want to see all the memory available from the OS so i can performe faster querys i n SQL Server.
I am Thinking in Installing OS w2k8 64 bits or w2k3 64 bits.
Does w2k8 support SQL Server 2000?
Do i have a SQL Server 2000 64 bits edition?
Can i take see all the memory (8gb) in my SQL Server if it is in 32 bits even with OS in 64 bits?
What do i need to install so that my SQL Server 2000 and 2005 can see the 8gb?
Thanks

You had better to configure AWE setting..no matter whether you have 4GB,16GB,32GB..Max memory used for Sql Server was only 4GB..You can overcome 4GB by using AWE

hum...
Even if i install an 64 bits OS and SQL Server 2005 64 Bits, still i need to configure AWE?

If you have Sql server 2005(64bits) ,it will supports up to 1 TB data..So no need to configure the AWE

Ok.
So, for me to have SQL Server capable of using all memory available on the server i just need to change my OS (w2k3) from 32 bits to 64 bits and then install SQL Server 2005 64 bits version, correct?
If, instead of installing w2k3 64 bits i install w2k8 64 bits, can i install SQL Server 2000 on it? or in w2k8 i can only install SQL Server 2005 and later versions of SQL?
Thank you

you can install 2000 on 2008 x64, but as 2000 is 32bit only it uses WoW, need to ensure your running a minimum of SP4 for 2000
I only found this out as I was given the go ahead to upgrade our dev / uat / systest 200- environment to 2008 so installed 2k8 with sql 2k8 on new servers, but then they pulled the plug on the upgrade so instead of destroying the virtual machines just installed 2000 on top of win 2k8 x64 sp1

So, you are saying that i can install SQL Server 2000 (with sp4) on an windows 2k8 64 bits but, because SQL Server 2000 exists only in 32 bits version it will only see 4 GB of memory, correct?

To my knowledge..Sql Server 2000 doesn't work on windows 2008..

Unsure on this as the servers where none preduction so only had 4GB of RAM anyway

It does work as I was running three environments on Win 2k8 SP1 SQL 2000 SP4, but its not supported by Microsoft, 2000 went out of support a long time ago, its one where you do it at your own risk as the first thing MS will tell you to do is move to SQL 2k5 or 2k8

Ok, in that case i think that the better thing to do is install w2k3 64 bits and SQL Server 2005 64 bits and SQL Server 2000.

I think that it's more secure to install w2k3 64 bits and SQL Server 2005 64 bits and SQL Server 2000 32 bits.
With w2k3 64 the Os will see the 8GB of memory and SQL Server 2005 64 can use then without the need of configuring AWE, correct?
Then install SQl server 2k 32 bits (because i think that it does not exist an 2000 64 bits).
What do you think?

is this a production environment?
if so I would not risk running 2000 on 64 bit operating systems, I would leave it 32bit always.
I was just saying it could be done, I would never recommend doing it, just that was the only way we could meet the deadlines of the project in my senario above

Why don't you think that it's good ideia to install SQL Server 2000 32 bits on a Windows 2k3 64 bits?
November 15, 2011 at 3:46 am
because the product was not developed for a 64 bit environment

Other possibility that i have is to change the OS of the server to windows 2k8 64 bits and install on it SQL Server 2005 64 bits, then , install a virtual machine on the server with w2k3 32 bits with SQL Server 2000.
In this moment i only see 4 GB of memory (but i have 8GB).
If i install W2k8 i can give 6 GB to SQL Server and then install a virtual machine that uses the other 2 GB available to SQL Server 2000.
