I am new to SQL Server, but have managed to successfully use VB (ADO) and Native Client 11 to communicate with SQL Server 12. I have also used ODBC (DSN and DSN-less), but it appears that ADO is more flexible.
Any ideas appreciated.

Not sure what the question is, but it seems you're right, ADO.NET and the native client are more flexible.
Just a sidenote: the OLE DB provider is deprecated since the release of SQL Server 2012:

Many thanks for the reply.
I need to use Access (not .NET) as the front end and had a general question about ADO and Native Client. As time goes by, I will be back wiht more questions.
