I am taking over an existing server that has SQL 2000 8.00.194 (RTM). Can this version be updated with SP4?
Thanks!

yes

Apply SP4 and this includes all cumulative patches before it. Be aware that there are a number of post SP4 fixes, including SP4 issues with AWE.

Got it, thanks. I just wasnt sure if RTM implied some restrictions around its license agreement.
I appreciate the info.

I attempted to apply SP4, but before the wizard start, it pops a message saying the SQL Server is not installed. I have no idea how this was installed, but generally, is there a reason why I would get this message, even though SQL is in fact installed? SQL Agent is even running. One thing I see is that there is no 'Maintenance Plans' within Enterprise Manager.
Thanks!
