If you can drop down the DB's, Tables etc, its obviously online.
Some times remote servers take a while to display the color status.

if the status icon is blank this indicates you do not have permissions to manage the SQL Server services on that machine!

pop your windows account into the local administrators group on that server and then check the results

I have seen many servers with a "blank state". These are usually SQL2000 servers in a clustered environment. Microsoft has never gotten those to appear *** running/stopped in SSMS2005/2008.
I've also had trouble with certain clustered 2005 or 2008 servers being shown as running. Right now, I'm looking at the Production group and half the servers have no state indicated, almost all of these are clusters. I've seen this issue at three different jobs, so it's certainly not unique to any one environment.
Just as a side rant, in SQL 2000 EM, EM polled the servers for their state, you could see when a server went off line. SSMS does not seem to do this, it always displays the status of the server when SSMS is first opened.

Is the Remote SQL Server version 2000? If it is , this is what usually happens (exceptions).
When i connect to SQL 2000 SP3 Boxes, they are Blank(white), but when SP4, will show correct icon(color). Again if this version is a hotfix, again the White space.
It also depends on SQL Server 2000 SP4 + Windows 2003 SP2 = white color icon
SQL Server 2000+ SP4 = Correct Color icon.
Again, the information above is for SQL 2000 only and i haven't experienced anything else on 2005 or 2008.
I can confirm this as i manage 80+ Individual database Boxes from 2000 to 2000SP1 to SP4 to 2005 and 2008 on windows 2000 and 2003

sorry, yes on the 2008 sql instance builtin admins group is no longer provisioned into sql server, but on the sql 2005 instance it should work. What service pack are the 2008 and 2005 instances?
