SQL Monitoring Tools

  • Hi guys, I look after 5TB of data in 2000 DBs and 100 instances. My boss will let me have a funky tool for monitoring this estate but wants value for money. Could someone please recommend a tool for me. I've looked at Red Gate but it seems a bit simplistic, whereas Quest seems pricey. Any help much appreciated.

  • Red Gate isn't built for maintaining hundreds of instances of SQL Server (yet), based on the scale you're looking at, I'd suggest either Microsoft SCOM or SQL Sentry. Either should scale well for what you need. Wait around long enough though and Red Gate SQL Monitor is going to be ready for it as well, just not yet.

  • This is indeed quite a large number of databases/servers

SQL Stripes can monitor quite a few.

I suggest you give it a shot (free trial and everything) and should you like it, discuss a smart deployment plan to cover the number of servers you have
