I would like to setup SQL Mail for alerts on my production SQL Servers. There is some concern from the System Admin that this may introduce a security risk.
Does anyone have any pro's or con's with using SQL Mail?

We use this on our production environment to alert me by email and by text messaging and pager. I don't feel there is much of a security risk with the way we have it setup.
The account we use to send email alerts is a domain account and has limited permissions. Since this is service dependent upon the SQL Server Agent account rights you should be cautious about its permissions.
We originally set it up to use an SMTP Server but had enough inconsistencies that we switched over to using Outlook 2K and our company's exchange server. Since then haven't had too many problems--most being our security folks blocking our packets between the two machines.
MAJOR CON: Connectivity...if the email doesn't go through, how will you know about it being down or starting to have problems?
Make sure that you have another application that is also checking the availability of your SQL Server. We use IP Monitor and polls the server every so often.
Hope this helps.
