SQL Licensing

  • Hi there - We have multiple SQL environments, a few of them are production which run Enterprise version of SQL Server.

Most of our development and QA environments run Developer edition however I would like to know if I would be ok to install Enterprise edition on a QA machine without any costing implications. Would it be the case that because we have production licenses can we install enterprise on other non-production machine without having to purchase more Enterprise license?

    Thanks all!

First, no, you would have to purchase the appropriate licenses for Enterprise Edition on the QA server you install it.

Second, why would you want to install Enterprise Edition on a QA system when you can install the Developer Edition at a significantly lower cost and the Developer Edition gives you all the same features and capability of the Enterprise Edition.

  • Thanks Lynn. I know that developer edition has the same features but it was installed in error and databases have already been created on the instance. I just wnted to know if I could save myself the job of migrating to dev edition. Thanks!
