Hi,
We bought SQL Server 2005 Enterprise per processor licences (for VMware host machines) for a migration project from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. But our management is now planning to consider SQL Server 2008 for this project.
So is there any way in which we can upgrade the same SQL Server 2005 Enterprise per processor licences to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise per processor licences and install SQL Server 2008 .
FYI, we are currently using Windows server 2003 enterprise for this project.
Thank You,
Yours

Depends on how you purchased your SQL Server 2005 licenses. I'd check with your vendor.

Hi Lynn,
Thank you very much for your reply.
But, could you explain this statement
"Depends on how you purchased your SQL Server 2005 licenses"
so that I can have some more clear picture

Sometimes when you buy a license you purchase an upgrade uption, sometimes not. This depends on the vendor. That is why it is a good idea to call your vendor and discuss with them as Lynn suggested.

Only your vendor can tell you the exact terms you bought your licenses under, so only they can give you a definitive answer.
Upgrading to a new version is only free if you have software assurance, and that only allows upgrade to the next version, so an upgrade to 2005 from 2000 would be cost free, but to 2008 would not.
You may in fact have bought SQL 2008 licenses with a downward compatibility option allowing you to install SQL 2005 under the license.
Hope that helps

As everyone else has said - you need to check with your vendor. Also, check with your management and find out if you have purchased software assurance - and whether or not that applies to your situation.
I know for us, we have the ability to upgrade any existing licenses (including SQL Server 2000) to any version available because of software assurance. Again, don't assume that it applies in your case - but it is something I would check.

I'm wondering if George might be onto something.. Does MS still sell 2005 or do they sell 208 with downgrade? I completely agree with everyone here, you need to find out the terms of your purchase and what upgrade programs your office participates in. This could all be an academic discussion..

I don't get involved in purchasing myself so I could be wrong, but I do believe MS don't sell 2005 licenses anymore, but 2008 with the downgrade option.

George, That was my thought as well.
