I have installed SQL 2000 on 2003 server and of course the services will not start untill I apply SP3 or higher. When I run through the SP3a setup it keeps tring to verify the user and it will not pass that stage. I know I can't install SQL 2000 on 2003 without SP3 but I can't apply SP3 with out the service started. Does anyone have an idea what I need to do.

Sounds like a problem with your initial install of SQL2K. Check the install logs and see if there were any problems, also check the System and Application event logs to find out the reason why the services won't start. It could be that you used a domain user for the startup of those services and just have the incorrect password in there.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The service account did not have rights to the datafiles and failed to start. I thought whenever you installed SQL with the service account your using, it assigned the NTFS rights automaticlly. But I've found out that I have to go back and reassign the rights it needs including the the rights in the registry.
