Ok right, so we are staying here then.So I'm interested, for the first 6 years (can you give a rough time frame) so we can put that into context what were you duties which lead to the job title 'dba'.
How did you keep up with current issues, information etc.
You still haven't said what YOU are ?

Not really material to my being a DBA, but I built our SQL Server systems from the ground up at my last employer. Everything I learned initially was from learning OJT, trial and error. We had no Microsoft SQL Server expertise in our organization and I didn't even know about this site untill 2004. I didn't start getting SQL Server Magazine until 2005 (or there about).
Ahhhh, someone from such humble beginnings as me 🙂
I do hope that the OP has not actually been put off by the negativity in the post.
Sure, everyone has an opinion, but it would have saved a lot of time if the question was simply answered instead of questioning the OP's ability and language skills.

So lets wait for the OP to respond :doze: (getting through them icons)

The question was answered, quite a few times.

So, NotManyPoints, answer Noel are you?

Oh, I may as well extend that I shouldn't be a DBA because I have no knowledge regarding replication. Yes, I set it up once years and years ago as an exercise, but I have never had to deal with it in a production or development environment. I know it exists, but that's about it. I would definately have a lot to learn if that changes. After working with SQL Server for 9 years I have finally had to learn replication in a full on production environment. I would have put it on my resume in the past but had never really supported a large implementation of it. Now that I have, I can clearly say that I knew nothing about it and therefore I too Lynn am not a qualified DBA.
Glad to be in your ranks!
Let me join those ranks too. Replication is what an amoeba does every few seconds right?

the only knowledge I have about SQLCLR is that it is there.
'awareness'
The OP asked about SQL Injection.
'awareness'
What's your arguement?

I think out of the 1 million users in this site, maybe a dozen of them might be "THE DBA". I am not. I have no clue about CLR's.

If answered, asked again not

compelled to respond, many post when value they add not.
This the path to the forum dark side is..
care we must all take, to that way stray not.
Time to end this thread perhaps it is?

Some may think. From original post has strayed, but understanding of ones thoughts vital it is.
Why is one thought of less because of knowledge one may lack regarding SQL Injection?

Lot of effort on the jedi speak. But the choice was taken to continue the thread here.
To paraphrase Lynn:rolleyes:: we should stay to benefit the OP.
Anyway this is a discussion forum, the question was answered (many times), but a discussion still exists.
If Jonathan Kehayias could read where this thread has been and gone, the comment would have some context.

Lot of effort on the jedi speak.
Jedi, not. Yoda, yes.
I really don't want to read through all the posts to find where you said "I am a ...", so please restate it for all to know.
As for me, my official title is System Administrator, but by position I am Senior DBA/Team Lead.

So for Noel:
Would be too easy just to say (not sure if I know myself).
Work on the avatar.
But I have had to learn, fulfill and guide others on all the tasks indicated in the article, I linked to earlier.
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Miscellaneous/2744/
And not limited to it.
But I lean more towards general software development architecture, which 99% of the time comes with database interaction.
But have to handle issues both on the SQL side (dev/admin) and the development side. And try to get both sides of the fence to work together. Grrrr cubicle offices:angry:
Hybrid dba, Hybrid developer, all round make sure stuff gets done, I don’t know…

News for you I have, most of us you described just now.
Except maybe for big companies, this is exactly what you will find. I do more than just DBA work myself. As does GilaMonster and others that have ventured in on this thread and frequent SSC.
