SQL DBA ROLE AND DUTIES

    any help will be appreciated.

    our organization has finally decided to have an official dba position and TAG AM IT.

    Problem: i have to by the end of business today, list all the things that i have been doing with sqlserver.

    other than the usual backups and restores, i find that i am at a loss of ideas. even though i have been demanding that this role be created for years.. i cant come up  with all the duties that a DBA does.

    i have been told that the document i create will determine the pay scale for the position.

     

    any pointers... sites, that i can go to get tis information.

    Here is a list and a link for your browsing. Hope this helps!

    Daily

    1.Check the SQL Error logs for any errors that may of occured overnight.

    2.Check available physsical Diskspace (stored procedure)

    3.Check the Event Viewer.

    4.Check the jobs for failed completion.

    5.Check backups and log sizes.

    6.Monitor performance with PERFMON

    7.Check for outstanding active or blocked transactions. (stored procedure)

    Weekly

    1.Run Indexing

    2.Run Integrity checks

    Monthly

    1.Perform monthly security audits on all logins and users to SQL Server.

    2.Perform physical disk fragmentation on data drives.

    Just one day to gather roles and responsibilities ? Well, there are good posts to go by and lots of information out on the web. I'd really think twice though before committing ... depending on ...

    1) the size of your organization

    2) the number of servers

    3) number and types of applications

    4) network and OS support

    5) SLA's (Service Level Agreements) for network, OS, Applications & SQL Server
