This is a good place where you can start learning. You have a blog, script and article library. QotD section is like a checking-up your knowledge. You can filter question there and answer them.
You can learn here much more then just from online courses, and of course by applying the theory on your test/dev servers.

The online courses will introduce you to the basics. I think they are helpful in terms of getting you used to the language and concepts. Then read these threads. This place is your best resource in many ways. And most of all - write SQL. Just get in a database (preferably where it doesn't matter if you accidentally tear something up!) with some basic questions to see what you can do. After you get comfortable with the basic syntax and concepts, I've found SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals by Itzik Ben-Gan to be helpful. But I don't think it's one to jump in right away. When I was first starting I bought Sam Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes by Ben Forta (that is, 10 minute lessons - not 10 minutes and you've mastered the whole book!). That along with the online tutorials helped me get my bearings.

if your just getting started into sql i would suggest "Essential SQL on SQL Server 2008" by Sikha Bagui and Richard Earp (Amazon Link). i knew quite alot but i still picked up a couple of nuggets. i found SAMS Teach your self SQL in 10 Min was more orcale oriented (or at least was when i read it).
