SQL Compatibility with Active Directory 2008 R2

  • I've been asked by our Infrastructure group to find out if our various SQL versions are compatibile with AD 2008 R2. I'm assuming that what needs to be considered is SQL security and NT authentification.

Does anybody know any place or article where Microsoft might document a compatibility list of AD 2008 R2 with the versions of the SQL products?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thank you

  • I can tell you SQL Server 2000/2005/2008 are compatible with AD2008. R2 doesn't fundamentally change authentication mechanisms, so far as I am aware. So all 3 supported versions should still be fully compatible. Keep in mind that SQL Server actually hands off Windows authentication to the SSPI of the OS on which it is installed. And I've seen no guidance that Windows 2000 on up are not supported on Windows 2008 AD (other than the fact that Windows 2000 is coming to end of extended support).

  • Thank you very much for the information, that is both an answer and an explanation. I understand what you are saying about how authentication works in SQL and that makes sense.

    ...thanks again

  • I too appreciated this post. This is exactly the information I needed to provide our Network group support for an AD 2008 upgrade. We still have a single server running SQL 2000 (hopefully soon to be upgraded) and the AD upgrade was urgently needed for another application issue. As always, great reputable information on this site and I thank you for your work.
