We have a sql anywhere version 11 VM environment we want to migrate to sql server 2016.
Microsoft provides a migration tool but our SQl Anywhere version is too old for that. an upgrade is needed.
I created a copy of the VM with the intention of upgrading it to sql anywhere version 16 using a trial release.
The problem happened when I tried to start the SQL Anywhere service on the VM copy.
The error said "A database server with that Name has already started." How can I get past this error message.
I assume I have to rename the database server.

I contacted SAP. They said this error happened because our maintenance agreement had expired. So to use a test environment for our SQl Server migration, we have to pay.
The only free alternative is to create scripts to extract the schema, data, functions and other brick a brac and convert it to sql. server. Then pray the revised sql server version works with the application front end.
If we upgrade sql anywhere to the current supported versions, Microsoft has a free script to migrate sql anywhere to sql server. That should do most of the grunt work.
The sensible way to do this is get support and create a test environment.
